ARE concludes ESG compliance training for mini-grid developers in Africa

The Alliance for Renewable Electrification (ARE) has successfully concluded its latest ESG compliance training programme for mini-grid developers, reinforcing its commitment to building sustainable and responsible renewable electrification projects across Africa.

The one-month training equipped 25 participating developers with the knowledge and practical tools needed to strengthen environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance throughout the project lifecycle. Participants explored key topics including environmental and social screening, community engagement and stakeholder management, land acquisition and biodiversity considerations, as well as the internal systems and processes required for effective ESG implementation.

The programme was delivered by Innovation Energie Développement (IED) as part of the “ESG Compliance Toolkit for African Mini-Grids” initiative led by the African Development Bank Group’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), the IFC International Finance Corporation, and the Alliance for Renewable Electrification.

By strengthening developers’ capacity to embed robust ESG practices into their operations, the training contributes to the delivery of more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient renewable electrification solutions. The initiative also supports the long-term development of high-quality mini-grid projects that can deliver lasting social, environmental, and economic benefits to communities across Africa.

ARE extends its thanks to all participants, partners, and trainers whose contributions helped make the programme a success and looks forward to continuing its capacity-building efforts in support of the renewable electrification sector.
