Enviroearth – Hybrid renewable energy system (South Sudan & Ghana)

Description

  • Off-grid hybrid renewable energy system comprising 640 kWp of ultra-lightweight flexible CIGS photovoltaic panels combined with 3 MWh battery energy storage. The project also includes a 12 kWp solar hybrid installation at a Ghanaian Armed Forces training centre near Accra, Ghana.
  • Bentiu, South Sudan and Ghana Armed Forces Training Centre, Ghana.
  • Project on progress since 2026, expected to be commissioned in may 2027.

Company description

Since 2001, Enviroearth has been designing and deploying energy and environmental solutions tailored to the most demanding contexts worldwide.

As a systems integrator and EPC company, we manage the entire project lifecycle, from design and procurement to installation, commissioning and operation. This integrated approach enables us to deliver tailor-made, high-performance and turnkey solutions to our partners.

Turnkey Projects in Remote Environments

We support our customers and business partners in delivering comprehensive solutions that address the technical, energy, logistical and operational challenges specific to remote and isolated territories.

For 25 years, Enviroearth has been putting its expertise at the service of public and private stakeholders, delivering technical projects in complex environments across the globe.

With 95% of our business generated through exports, our multidisciplinary and experienced team operates internationally, from Africa and South America to Oceania and other remote territories.

Our expertise is built around two complementary areas of activity:

  • Environmental Monitoring
We design and integrate high-precision systems dedicated to the measurement, monitoring and transmission of environmental and geophysical data, meeting the requirements of international and scientific monitoring networks.
  • Renewable Energy
We develop photovoltaic power plants and hybrid energy systems designed to provide reliable and sustainable power, both in remote locations and at grid-connected sites.

The Challenge

Bentiu is one of the most isolated regions of South Sudan and is frequently affected by flooding, making road access impossible for much of the year. The project will power a peacekeeping camp managed by a UN mission in South Sudan, which hosts more than 100,000 civilians under United Nations protection, as well as nearly 2,000 humanitarian workers and peacekeeping personnel. Ensuring a reliable energy supply for these critical operations is essential while reducing dependence on diesel fuel and complex fuel logistics.

Renewable Solution

To strengthen the site’s energy autonomy and resilience, a hybrid solution combining solar power and battery storage was selected. The combination of flexible CIGS photovoltaic panels and a large-scale battery storage system significantly reduces fuel consumption, while ensuring a reliable and continuous power supply in this remote, off-grid environment.

The flexibility and ease of transport of the panels also provide a major logistical advantage, making them particularly well suited to this remote and difficult-to-access location.

Project Financing and Costs

This project is funded by the Danish government in support of a United Nations program, and its cost is estimated at more than 3.3 million EUR.

Project Outcome

The project is currently under deployment. Expected outcomes include substantial reductions in diesel consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions, together with improved energy security and autonomy for United Nations peacekeeping and humanitarian operations in Bentiu.

The Bundase military camp in Ghana will provide training for Ghanaian soldiers, including those deployed to Bentiu, South Sudan. To support these training activities and strengthen the site’s energy independence, a 12 kWp solar power system will be installed.
