The D-REC Organization

Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) projects generate electricity and create an attribute that can be recognized through Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) markets. These markets evolved largely around utility-scale, grid-connected generation, leaving mini-grids, solar home systems, and other distributed renewable energy projects with limited pathways to participate.

The D-REC Organization stewards D-RECs, a market mechanism that enables DRE projects across Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) to participate credibly in recognized EAC markets. The D-REC Label, qualification frameworks, verification methodology, and governance enable this participation within existing registries and standards.

D-RECs have already been applied across more than 1,600 sites in 20 countries, with over 125 GWh of I-REC(E) issued. For distributed renewable energy developers, participation in D-RECs creates an additional revenue stream from the environmental attributes their projects already generate, enabling participation in corporate renewable energy procurement through recognized EAC markets.

We welcome engagement from distributed renewable energy developers, financiers, technology providers, and industry partners working to unlock additional value from DRE projects through recognized EAC markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
